With all 11 men contributing, the Floods defeated the Aces 14 - 8 on July 25th at Playfields Park in Davis.  There were four lead changes in this exciting game that saw the Floods play excellent defense throughout, as the offense really got rolling in the late innings and the Floods pulled away for the win.

Dave Gordon started for the Floods and the Aces put together a couple of hits in the 1st and a solo home run in the 2nd to take the early lead 3 - 0 as the Floods went quietly in the first 2 frames.  Geodie Osborn relieved Gordon in the 3rd.  A hit, walk and hit batter loaded the bases with nobody out, and that's when the Floods defense started to shine.  The next batter hit a sharp liner down the right field line which was speared by 1st baseman Taylor Speier who stepped on the bag to complete the unassisted double play.  Osborn then induced a weak pop up and the Floods were out of the jam with no damage done.

The Floods tied the score in the top of the 4th with a 2-out rally.  Walks to Osborn and Val Ravarra put men on 1st and 2nd with 2 down.  Rich Fuentes singled sharply to drive in a run, and then Dan Howell hit a shot down the right field line to drive in 2 more and knot the score at 3 - 3.  But the Aces came right back with a run on 2 hits in the bottom of the 4th to regain the lead 4 - 3 going to the 5th.

The Floods wasted no time responding.  Tim Hodson and Gordon walked, and Alec Moorhouse doubled to drive in Hodson and tie the score.  Ryan Ceriani then delivered a sacrifice fly to drive in Gordon and the Floods again had the lead 5 - 4.  The Aces weren't done yet.  They put 2 on the board in the bottom of the 6th and the lead had again changed hands with the Floods trailing 6 - 5.

Again the Floods came back with a 2-out rally.  Moorhouse reached on a fielder's choice and Ceriani walked.  With 2 down Speier hit a gapper to right center to drive them both in and the Floods led 7 - 6.  But this time they weren't going to let the lead get away.

Casey Zoller relieved Osborn in the 7th and again the defense stepped up.  With 2 down and a man on 1st shortstop Ceriani made a diving stop behind 2nd base of a sharply hit ball, spun around and from his knees flipped to 2nd baseman Ravarra for the force out to retire the side.

Ceriani's play ramped up the energy in the Floods dugout, and they hit the Aces with a 2-out nightmare in the 8th.  Zoller walked and Fuentes singled to put 2 men on with 2 outs.  Tim Hodson singled sharply down the left field line to drive in Fuentes, and Terrance Rodgers reached on an error as Fuentes scored.  Gordon, Moorhouse and Ceriani all followed with RBI base hits, another run scored on a wild pitch, and when the dust settled the Floods had put 6 more on the board and led 13 - 6.

Zoller surrendered a couple of runs in the bottom of the 8th, but the Floods got 1 back in the 9th when Zoller singled and Fuentes delivered an RBI base hit to make the score 14 - 8.  That was the final as Zoller retired the side quickly in the 9th to notch the save for winning pitcher Osborn.

This was the Floods best defensive game of the season.  The infield of Howell at 3rd, Ceriani at short, Ravarra at 2nd and Speier at 1st was outstanding.  The outfield of Fuentes, Moorhous and Hodson made every play, and Rodgers was solid behind the plate.

Offensively, everyone had a hand in the clutch production as the Floods scored 11 of their runs after 2 were out.  Moorhouse and Fuentes each had 3 hits, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.  Howell had 2 hits and drove in a couple, and Ceriani and Speier had 2 RBIs apiece.  Hodson and Gordon each scored twice and drove in a run, Rodgers had 2 hits and scored twice, Ravarra scored 2 runs, and Zoller and Osborn both reached base leading off to start big Floods innings.

This was truly a team win as the Floods put every man in the order, and they all stepped up to contribute to the win.

The Floods lost to the Patriots 8 - 3 on July 18th at Lembi Park in Folsom.  The Floods played well in this game but just couldn't put enough runs on the board as they saw their offensive struggles continue.

Leading off in the top of the 1st, Will Aaronson got things going for the Floods with a double off the right field fence.  Alec Moorhouse moved Aaronson over to 3rd with a groundout to the right side, and Ryan Ceriani drove him in with a sacrifice fly to give the Floods the early 1 - 0 lead.  Dave Gordon took the hill for the Floods and retired the Patriots quickly in the first 2 innings, needing just 20 total pitches.  But the Patriots put together a couple of hits in the 3rd and were able to tie the score as the teams went to the 4th inning knotted at 1 - 1.

The Floods went down quickly in the 4th through 6th innings, and the Patriots capitalized to take the lead.  They scored 5 times in the 4th on 5 base hits, and had another 3 hits in the 6th to score 2 more runs and the Floods were down 8 - 1 going to the 7th.  Taylor Speier singled in the 7th - the first Floods base hit since Dan Howell's single in the 3rd inning - but he was stranded at 1st and the score remained 8 - 1.

Moorhouse relieved Gordon and retired the Patriots quickly in the bottom of the 7th, and the Floods got something going in the 8th.  With 1 down Val Ravarra was hit by a pitch and Howell reached on an error.  Gordon walked to load the bases with 2 down, and Aaronson following with a nice AB to draw another walk and force in a run.  Howell then scored on a wild pitch and the score was 8 - 3 as the Floods had scored twice in the inning without benefit of a base hit.  In the 9th Ceriani and Geordie Osborn singled to put 2 men on for the Floods, but the big hit didn't materialize and the game ended with the Floods on the short end of the 8 - 3 score.

For the 2nd straight game the Floods defense was very good.  Gordon led the way with a great play in the 1st.  The Patriots leadoff man laid a good bunt down the 3rd base line.  Gordon charged off the mound and fielded the ball on a slide, and from his knees turned and threw a strike to Tim Hodson at 1st to nail the runner by a half step.  The defense up the middle was strong, with Osborn and Howell sharing catching duties, Ceriani at short, Ravarra at 2nd, and Moorhouse and Aaronson in center.  Rich Fuentes also played well in the outfield, as he cut off a base hit down the left field line in the 5th and threw a strike to Ravarra at 2nd to nail the base runner trying to stretch it to a double.  But it was the lack of offense - too few Floods base hits, only 5, and too many Floods strikeouts, 12 in the game - that made the difference in this one.

The Floods will play the Aces on July 25th.

The Floods lost to the Scorpions 13 - 1 on July 11th at Mather Sports Complex as their recent struggles to put runs on the board continued.

Geordie Osborn and Val Ravarra pitched the first 6 innings for the Floods in this one, but the Scorpions pounded out 18 hits against them and scored 13 times.  Dave Gordon took over and retired the side quickly in the 7th, but by that time the outcome was no longer in doubt.

Will Aaronson got the Floods attack off on the right foot leading off in the 1st, driving a 1-1 pitch over the fence in right center at the 370 foot sign to put the Floods on the board.  Alec Moorhouse and Taylor Speier followed with singles, but a double play ended the threat.  The Floods put 2 men on in the 2nd on a walk to Gordon and a base hit by Rich Fuentes, but again a double play shut them down.  After the 2nd the Floods managed only 3 base hits, 2 by Ryan Ceriani and another base hit by Aaronson, but never seriously threatened as the offense sputtered and the Scorpions pulled away.

The Floods played solid defense in this game, led by Ceriani at short and Tim Hodson at 1st.  With runners on 1st and 3rd in the 2nd inning the Scorpions attempted a double steal.  Ceriani cut off catcher Dan Howell's throw to 2nd and fired the ball back to Howell who blocked the plate firmly and applied the tag to nail the runner.  In the 3rd the Floods turned a nice 6-4-3 double play (Ceriani to Ravarra to Hodson) that featured Hodson's nice pick of a throw in the dirt to complete the twin killing.  Hodson also made a nice catch of a tricky pop up in shallow right field in the 7th.  In all Ceriani had 2 putouts and 6 assists in the game, including starting another nice 6-4-3 double play (Ceriani to Jon Evans to Hodson) in the 7th.  The outfield of Fuentes in left, Moorhouse in center and Aaronson in right also played well, recording 8 putouts.

The Floods will be looking to get the offense back on track against the Patriots on July 18th.

GOOD START - TOUGH FINISH IN LOSS TO CANES

                                              R   H   E

Floods   200   000   0XX    2    7   2

Canes    000   229   XXX  13  16  0

The Floods lost to the first place Canes 13 - 2 on June 27th at Sierra College in a game they led early, only to have things unravel late leading to the lopsided loss.

The Floods jumped out to the early lead with a 2-out rally in the top of the 1st.  Alec Moorhouse singled, moved to 2nd on a groundout, and with 2 down Geordie Osborn doubled to drive Moorhouse in.  Casey Zoller then delivered an RBI single to give the Floods a 2 - 0 lead.

Dave Gordon got his first start for the Floods and pitched 3 strong innings.  He held the league-leading Canes offense scoreless, allowing only 1 hit while striking out 3, and the game moved to the 4th inning with the Floods holding that 2 - 0 lead.

Moorhouse took over from Gordon in the 4th and the Canes put together 3 well-placed base hits to tie the score at 2 - 2.  Terrance Rodgers singled for the Floods in the top of the 5th, but he was stranded and the Canes were right back on the attack.  Again they put together some hits that found holes, and with a Floods error mixed in scored 2 more runs - 1 earned - to take the lead 4 - 2 after 5.

The Floods threatened in the 6th as Ryan Ceriani and Zoller singled and both moved up a base on a wild pitch with only 1 down.  But the Floods couldn't convert and the score was unchanged going to the bottom of the 6th.

The bottom of the 6th was a nightmare for the Floods.  The first 8 Canes hitters in the inning all reached base and scored.  Osborn relieved Moorhouse midway through the frame, but in all 9 runs crossed the plate and what had been a tight game now saw the Floods trailing 13 - 2.  The Floods were retired quickly in the 7th and the game ended at that point on the 10-run rule.

The defense made 2 errors in this game, leading to 2 unearned runs, but that wasn't the difference in the contest.  For the 2nd straight game the Floods offense produced only 2 runs and that wasn't going to be enough against the potent Canes attack.

The Floods next game will be on July 11th against the Scorpions.

FLOODS LOSE TO FIREBIRDS

Floods       000   100   100   2    7    3

The Floods lost to the Firebirds 8 - 2 on June 20th at Peterson Field as the team's offense couldn't come up with the rally needed to overcome an early Firebirds lead.

Val Ravarra got the start for the Floods and delivered one of the team's best pitching performances of the season.  He gave up 3 base hits in the 1st inning, and combined with a Floods error the Firebirds pushed across 3 runs - 2 earned.  But Ravarra settled down from there, allowing only 4 more base hits and 1 additional unearned run in the next 6 innings, while striking out 5.  The Floods had base hits in each of the first 3 innings - singles by Ryan Ceriani in the 1st, Dave Gordon in the 2nd, and Terrance Rodgers in the 3rd - but couldn't convert and went to the 4th trailing 4 - 0.

Alec Moorhouse led off the bottom of the 4th and doubled to the fence in left center.  Moorhouse then tagged and went to 3rd on a fly ball, and scored on a wild pitch to get the Floods on the board.  But the Floods went quietly in the 5th and 6th as Ravarra continued to hold the Firebirds in check, and the game moved to the bottom of the 7th with the Floods trailing 4 - 1.

Ceriani was hit by a pitch leading off the 7th, and Geordie Osborn followed with a single.  Both runners moved up on a ground out by Gordon, and another ground out by Rich Fuentes drove in Ceriani and the Floods had narrowed the gap to 4 - 2 heading to the 8th.

Fuentes relieved Ravarra in the 8th and quickly ran into trouble.  A walk, a hit batter, 3 base hits and a Floods error led to 4 Firebirds runs - 3 earned - and left runners on 1st and 2nd with no one out.  Gordon relieved Fuentes and restored order.  The first man he faced hit a grounder to 3rd baseman Osborn who stepped on the bag and threw across to 1st baseman Tim Hodson to complete the double play.  Gordon then struck out the next man to retire the side, but the damage was done as the Floods trailed 8 - 2 going to the bottom of the 8th.

The Floods put men on base in the last 2 innings - on a sharp single by Hodson in the 8th and Moorhouse's 2nd double of the game in the 9th - but they both were stranded as the game ended with the Floods on the short end of the 8 - 2 score.

The Floods made 3 errors in this game that led to 3 unearned runs.  But they played some solid defense as well, led by Rodgers behind the plate, Ceriani at short, Hodson at 1st, and Osborn and Dan Howell who shared 3rd base duties.  But the offense managed only 7 base hits - never more than 1 in any inning - and despite Ravarra's solid pitching performance, 2 runs just wasn't going to be enough.

The Floods next will play the Canes on June 27th.

FLOODS DROP A PAIR TO ACES

The Floods lost both ends of a double header to the Aces on June 13th at Peterson Field, dropping the opener 13 - 7 and falling 15 - 12 in the nightcap.  The long ball and the inability to avoid the big inning led to defeat for the Floods in both games.

Game 1

                                             R    H   E

Aces      052   021   021   13  17   3

Floods   210   001   300     7  14   1

The Floods jumped out in front in this game as the first 4 men in the order had base hits in the bottom of the 1st.  Will Aaronson singled leading off and Alec Moorhouse drove him in with a double to the fence in left center.  Taylor Speier singled and Geordie Osborn delivered an RBI single, but the Floods could do no further damage as they took the lead 2 - 0 after 1 inning.

Osborn started for the Floods and retired the side quickly in the 1st, but the Aces put together several ground ball base hits in the 2nd and scored 5 runs - 4 earned - to take the lead.  With 1 out in the 2nd Dan Howell hit a scorching liner over the fence in dead center field and the Floods had closed the gap to 5 - 3 after 2.  But the Floods were retired quickly in the 3rd, 4th and 5th and watched as the Aces belted 2-run home runs in the 3rd and 5th innings and added a single run in the 6th to extend the lead to 10 - 3 going to the bottom of the 6th.

The Floods mounted a comeback in the 6th and 7th.  Val Ravarra singled leading off the 6th, moved to 2nd on a fly ball, and with 2 outs Howell drove him in with a single.  In the 7th Speier led off with a single and Ravarra also singled to put runners on the corners with 2 outs.  Rich Fuentes then delivered an RBI base hit, and 2 more runs scored as the Aces misplayed Tim Hodson's hard ground ball, and the Floods had narrowed the gap to 10 - 7 going to the 8th.

After relieving Osborn, Ravarra retired the Aces quickly in the 7th.  But in the 8th after a 2-out base hit the Aces stroked their 3rd 2-run home run of the game, and the lead was back to 12 - 7.  After the Aces added another run in the 9th, the Floods loaded the bases with 2 down in the bottom of the 9th as Casey Zoller walked and Ravarra and Fuentes singled, but the big hit didn't materialize and the game ended 13 - 7.

The Floods played solid defense in this game, particularly the defense up the middle with Howell behind the plate, Ryan Ceriani at short, Ravarra at 2nd and Moorhouse in center.  They pounded out 14 base hits, led by Ravarra with 3 and 2 each by Moorhouse, Speier, Fuentes and Howell, who homered and drove in 2.  But they also left 13 men on base in this game, including leaving the bases loaded in the 7th and 9th innings, as the Aces big 2nd inning and 3 home runs proved too much to overcome.

Game 2

                                              R    H    E

Floods   400   104   03X   12   12   2

Aces      107   040   3XX   15   12   2

The Floods again took the early lead in Game 2, scoring 4 times with 2 down in the top of the 1st.  Alec Moorhouse reached on an error and Taylor Speier was hit by a pitch.  With 2 outs Casey Zoller doubled to left center to drive them both in.  Then Val Ravarra and Dave Gordon both walked and 2 more runs scored when the Aces misplayed Tad Daffin's ground ball.

Daffin started on the hill for the Floods and retired the Aces in the 1st and 2nd without allowing a hit, although an error led to an unearned run in the 1st.  Leading 4 - 1 Daffin quickly set down the first 2 men he faced in the bottom of the 3rd, but then the wheels came off.  The next 9 men Daffin faced reached base on 4 hits, 3 walks and 2 hit batters.  Austen Facino relieved Daffin with the bases loaded and 1 of those inherited runners scored before Facino got the final out of the inning.  In all 10 straight men reached base on only 4 hits and 7 scored as the Floods found themselves trailing 8 - 4 after 3 innings.

The Floods got one of those runs back in the 4th when Gordon singled and Ravarra walked, they both moved up on a wild pitch, and Gordon scored on another wild pitch to make it 8 - 5.  But Facino struggled in the 5th, walking 2, hitting 1 and allowing 3 hits as the Aces pushed across 4 more runs to make it 12 - 5.

Again the Floods rallied to close the gap in the top of the 6th.  Gordon was hit by a pitch and Ravarra walked, and with 1 out Will Aaronson singled to load the bases.  Moorhouse then cleared the bases with a double to the fence in left center.  Ryan Ceriani singled to drive in Moorhouse and the Floods were right back in it trailing 12 - 9.

Gordon took over on the hill in the 6th and quickly retired the Aces.  But with a run in, 2 down and a man on in the 7th, the Aces caught a break as a high fly ball to left got up in the wind and cleared the fence to make the score 15 - 9.  It was the 2nd 2-run home run of the game for the Aces, and their 5th of the day.

But the Floods would not go quietly.  Ceriani singled leading off the 8th, and with 1 down Zoller and Ravarra did the same to load the bases.  Gordon walked to force in a run, Daffin hit a sacrifice fly, and Rich Fuentes delivered an RBI single to make it 15 - 12.  That brought the tying run to the plate but the Floods couldn't convert and the game ended 15 - 12.

The outfield defense played by Moorhouse in center and Aaronson in left was outstanding in this game.  Moorhouse twice chased down long drives at the fence in center, and in the 4th he sprinted in to make a diving catch of a pop up in shallow center.  Aaronson made several nice plays, including racing far into foul territory to catch a deep drive in the 6th.

Offensively, 8 players hit safely with Ceriani, Zoller, Ravarra and Fuentes each getting 2 base hits.  Moorhose drove in 3, Zoller had 2 RBIs, Ravarra scored 3 times and Moorhouse, Ceriani and Gordon each scored twice.  The Floods showed a lot of resiliency in this game, mounting comebacks 3 different times, but they just weren't able to overcome that bad 3rd inning and the Aces 2-run home runs.

The Floods next will play the Firebirds on June 20th.

_________________________________________________  FLOODS BATTLE FOR WIN OVER SCORPIONS

                                                  R    H    E

Scorpions   101   111   200    7   12   1

Floods         133   000   51X  13  13   3

The Floods beat the Scorpions 13 - 7 on June 6th at River City High School.  The Floods fought hard in this game to overcome an injury to a key player and rally in the late innings to record what was truly a team win as every player had a hand in the victory.

Geordie Osborn led the way with his pitching effort.  For the 2nd straight game he did a good job of keeping the opposition in check.  Over 6 innings Osborn allowed 5 runs - 4 earned - as he denied the Scorpions the big inning, never allowing more than a single run in any frame while the Floods built an early lead.

Down 1 - 0 the Floods quickly tied the score in the bottom of the 1st.  For the 5th straight game Will Aaronson reached base leading off for the Floods, this time with a single.  Aaronson advanced on a fielder's choice and with 2 outs Casey Zoller drove him in with a base hit.  The Floods took the lead in the 2nd.  With 1 out Tim Hodson singled, Terrance Rodgers followed with an RBI triple, and  Aaronson drove in Rodgers with a sacrifice fly.  With 2 outs Alec Moorhouse stroked the Floods 2nd triple of the inning, and Taylor Speier doubled to drive him in and the Floods led 4 - 1.  They extended their lead in the 3rd.  Rob Dyer walked and Joe Caffrey was hit by a pitch, and they both moved up a base on a wild pitch.  With 1 out Val Ravarra singled to drive them both in.  Ravarra then stole 2nd and 3rd, and scored on a base hit by Rodgers, and the Floods led 7 - 2 going to the 4th.

The Floods suffered a serious injury in the top of the 5th when left fielder Dyer broke his wrist diving to catch a fly ball, and the team watched as one of its key players had to be taken to the emergency room.  The Scorpions continued to peck away at the Floods lead, adding single runs in the 4th, 5th and 6th as the Floods were retired quickly and in order in those middle innings.

The lead was 7 - 5 in the 7th when Osborn was relieved by Moorhouse in his 1st pitching appearance of the season.  Struggling a little with his command, Moorhouse walked the first 2 men he faced and they both ended up scoring to tie the score at 7 - 7.

After being stunned by Dyer's injury, finding themselves tied in a game that they'd led from the beginning seemed to put the thump right back into the Floods bats.  With 1 down in the bottom of the 7th Moorhouse singled and Speier followed by blasting a 3-0 pitch for a 2-run home run that cleared the fence in right center by at least 30 feet, and the Floods led 9 - 7.  Osborn drew a walk and Aaronson, running for Osborn, stole 2nd to get into scoring position.  With 2 outs Ryan Ceriani delivered an RBI base hit, and Caffrey followed by driving the 1st pitch he saw over the fence in left center at the 370 foot sign for another 2-run shot, and the Floods had stormed back into the lead 12 - 7.

Moorhouse held the Scorpions scoreless in the 8th, spearing a grounder up the middle with 2 outs and the bases loaded and throwing to 1st to record the final out of the inning.  The Floods added their final run in the bottom of the 8th as Hodson reached on an error and scored on a 2-out base hit by Moorhouse.  Ravarra relieved Moorhouse in the 9th and retired the Scorpions quickly on 12 pitches to secure the 13 - 7 Floods win.

Despite making 3 errors the Floods showed some outstanding defense in this game, led by Ceriani's solid play at short and some fine play in the outfield.  Before his injury, Dyer made several nice plays in left.  Moorhouse made 2 outstanding running catches in the right center gap, including the 9th inning catch that ended the game.  Aaronson also had an outstanding catch of a slicing liner in the gap, and in the 5th he recorded an outfield assist as he quickly fielded a drive off the left field fence and relayed to Ceriani, who threw a strike to Caffrey for the 7-6-4 putout, nailing the runner trying to stretch the hit into a double.

The offense was strong and deep, with contributions from many players for the 2nd straight game.  9 different players had base hits, led by Moorhouse with 3 and Speier and Rodgers with 2 apiece.  8 players drove in runs, led by Speier's 3 and 2 were out.

The Floods will play a double header against the Aces on June 13th.

The Floods beat the Royals 20 - 10 on May 23rd at Mather Sports Complex as the offense exploded for 20 hits, including 7 extra base hits, to overcome an early deficit and record the much needed win.

Terrance Rodgers took the hill for the Floods in his first pitching appearance of the season.  The Royals scored twice in the 1st on an error and a couple of hits.  The Floods responded with 2 runs of their own in the bottom of the 1st as Will Aaronson and Ryan Ceriani led off with singles, Taylor Speier stroked an RBI double, and Rob Dyer delivered a sacrifice fly.  In the top of the 2nd with 1 down and a man on 1st, shortstop Ceriani speared a line drive and threw quickly to 1st baseman Dyer to double up the base runner and retire the side, and the score remained 2 - 2.

The Floods regained the lead in the bottom of the 2nd with a 2-out rally.  Val Ravarra singled to open the inning but was erased on a fielder's choice by Alec Moorhouse.  Then with 2 outs Aaronson doubled to drive in Moorhouse, Ceriani was hit by a pitch and Speier walked to load the bases.  Geordie Osborn then delivered a 2-run single and the Floods led 5 - 2.  The Royals scored 3 times in the 3rd to tie the score as Rodgers started to tire.  With 1 down in the 4th he hit a batter and walked 1, and the Royals mixed in 3 extra base hits to score 5 times and take the lead 10 - 5.

Osborn relieved Rodgers with 1 down in the 4th and immediately started to dominate the Royals lineup that he was to hold scoreless the rest of the way.  He retired the side quickly in the 4th on 5 pitches.  Over his 4 and 2/3 innings he never needed more than 14 pitches in any inning as he struck out 4, scattered 4 hits, and faced only 3 over the minimum number of batters. The Floods defense supported Osborn with a nice 4-6-3 (Joe Caffrey to Ceriani to Dyer) inning-ending double play in the 6th, and the solid work of Dan Howell behind the plate, including his sliding catch of a foul popup in the 7th.  Osborn also helped himself by picking off a base runner to end the 7th.

With Osborn blanking the Royals the Floods offense began its comeback in the bottom of the 4th, again doing the damage after 2 were down.  Moorhouse singled to open the inning, and with 2 outs Ceriani singled as well.  Then Speier drove a 2-2 pitch into the right center gap for a double driving in 2.  After Osborn was hit by a pitch Casey Zoller doubled to drive in Speier.  The final run of the inning scored on a wild pitch and the Floods found themselves right back in this game trailing 10 - 9 going to the 5th.

Eleven pitches later the Floods were right back in the dugout as Osborn made quick work of the Royals in the 5th, and they picked up right where they left off with another 2-out rally.  Moorhouse again singled leading off the inning and Aaronson walked to put 2 men on.  With 2 down Speier sent a 1-1 pitch far over the right field fence for a 3-run home run and the Floods had the lead 12 - 10.  It was Speier's 3rd extra base hit of the game, giving him 6 RBIs through 5 innings.

The Floods were far from done.  Ravarra singled leading off the 7th, Moorhouse also singled, and Howell walked to load the bases with no outs.  Aaronson drove in a run with a groundout, and then Ceriani blasted one over the center fielder's head for the Floods 1st triple of the season to drive in 2 more.  A sacrifice fly by Speier plated Ceriani and the Floods had extended their lead to 16 - 10.

There was more.  Dyer and Caffrey led off the bottom of the 8th with singles, and Ravarra, Moorhouse and Howell all followed with RBI base hits of their own.  When Moorhouse scored on a wild pitch to make the score 20 - 10, the game ended on the 10-run rule in the 8th.

This was by far the Floods most impressive offensive showing of the season.  All 10 men in the batting order had at least 1 base hit; 9 different players had at least 1 RBI; and 8 different players scored at least 1 run.  Speier led the way with a home run and 2 doubles, as he had 7 RBIs and scored 3 times.  At the top of the order Aaronson and Ceriani each drove in 2, and between them they scored 7 times.  Moorhouse was 4 for 5 and scored 5 runs, Ravarra had 3 hits and scored twice, and Osborn drove in 2 in addition to his outstanding pitching performance.

The Floods will be looking to keep the momentum going in their next game against the Scorpions on June 6th.

The Floods lost to the Royals 12 - 0 on May 23rd at Mather Sports Complex as both the offense and defense struggled to get on track.

Will Aaronson walked leading off the 1st for the Floods, stole 2nd, and tagged and went to 3rd on a fly ball, but he was stranded there.  He was to be the only Floods baserunner to advance past 2nd base in this game as the team managed only 2 base hits - singles by Rob Dyer and Taylor Speier - and never seriously threatened to score.

Dyer started for the Floods and fought a balky shoulder through 3 innings, giving up 5 runs - 4 earned.  Val Ravarra took over in the 4th, allowing a run in that frame as the Floods fell behind 6 - 0 after 4.  The 5th inning saw the Floods defensive issues continue as 3 errors led to 5 more unearned runs.  The Royals added a single run in the 6th, and the game ended 12 - 0 in the 7th on the 10-run rule.

The Floods are due to break out of the funk they've been in as they prepare for a rematch with  the Royals.

The Floods lost to the Scorpions 16 - 6 on May 16th at River City High School as the Floods defense continued to struggle, committing 6 errors that led to 8 unearned runs in this game.

The Floods came out aggressively in this one, taking the lead in the top of the 1st as Will Aaronson led off with a walk, went to 2nd on a wild pitch, moved to 3rd on a groundout, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Taylor Speier.  Rob Dyer retired the side quickly in the bottom of the 1st, but the Scorpions managed a couple of base hits in the 2nd to take the lead 2 - 1.

The Floods wasted no time responding.  Aaronson singled leading off the 3rd, and Ryan Ceriani was hit by a pitch to put men on 1st and 2nd.  With 1 down Aaronson and Ceriani executed a double steal, and Geordie Osborn followed with a double to left center to drive them both in as the Floods regained the lead.  With 2 outs Dyer delivered an RBI base hit, and then Casey Zoller hit a bomb over the fence in left center for a 2-run home run and the Floods led 6 - 2 and had the momentum going to the bottom of the 3rd.

It's hard to describe the bottom of the 3rd inning.  What could have been a fairly quick inning turned into a 45 pitch marathon for Dyer as the Floods made 4 errors allowing the Scorpions to score 6 unearned runs and take back the lead 8 - 6.  The bad inning also cost the Floods the offensive momentum they had built.  Alec Moorhouse singled leading off the 4th, but that was the last base hit the Floods were to get in this game.

Dyer retired the side in order in the bottom of the 4th, but all those extra pitches in the 3rd inning took their toll as he tired in the 5th.  Val Ravarra relieved Dyer with 1 down, but the Scorpions added 4 more runs - 1 unearned - and pushed the lead to 12 - 6.  With the Floods going quietly in the 5th, 6th and 7th innings the Scorpions put together a few hits and scored 4 more times in the bottom of the 7th to make it 16 - 6, the last run fittingly scoring on another Floods error as the game ended on the 10-run rule.

The Floods offense was clicking in those first 3 innings:  Aaronson reached base twice and scored twice; Speier and Dyer had RBIs; Osborn had a 2-run double; Zoller had a 2-run home run, and Joe Caffrey was 3 for 3.  But that rough bottom of the 3rd took the wind out of the offensive sails.

Through 7 games this season the Floods have made 21 errors resulting in 25 unearned runs.  They'll be looking to clean things up in a double header against the Royals on May 23rd.

For the 3rd straight game the Floods scored 6 runs on 10 hits, and for the 3rd straight game it wasn't enough as they lost to the Canes 13 - 6 on May 2nd at Mather Sports Complex.

Val Ravarra got the start for the Floods and pitched 5 strong innings, allowing only 1 earned run as he scattered 7 hits while striking out 2 and walking none.  But the Floods continued to pay the price for their defensive lapses as 3 errors in the first 2 innings led to 4 unearned Canes runs.

The Floods had their best offensive inning of the season in the 1st as they had 4 base hits, 2 walks and scored 4 times.  Leadoff man Will Aaronson singled sharply and then stole 2nd to get things started.  After Ryan Ceriani walked, Rob Dyer doubled to drive in 2, moved to 3rd on the throw to the plate, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Casey Zoller.  With 2 down Rich Fuentes drew a walk, and Alec Moorhouse and Joe Caffrey followed with singles, Caffrey's base hit driving in the 4th Floods run of the inning.  But those unearned runs left the score tied at 4 - 4 going to the 4th, when the Canes put together a couple of base hits to take the lead 5 - 4.  The Floods responded with a run in the 5th when Aaronson walked, again stole 2nd and scored on Taylor Speier's base hit, and the teams moved to the 6th inning tied 5 - 5.

Fuentes relieved Ravarra in the 6th and immediately had problems with his control.  He walked 3 and hit 1 batter in the inning, and with the Canes working in some base hits 5 runs crossed the plate and the Floods found themselves down 10 - 5.  The Floods had only 1 base hit in the 6th through the 8th frames - a single by Speier - while the Canes added 3 more runs in the 8th to take a commanding lead.  The Floods scored their final run in the 9th when Fuentes doubled, Caffrey had an infield single and Dan Howell delivered a 2 out RBI base hit, but that was it with the final score 13 - 6.

Despite those 3 early errors, the Floods showed some strong defense at other parts of this game.  They had 2 outfield assists.  In the 2nd center fielder Moorhouse cut off a base hit to right center and relayed to shortstop Ceriani who threw to Howell at 3rd to nail the base runner trying to go from 1st to 3rd on the play.  In the 9th left fielder Dyer tracked down a base hit down the line and threw to Howell to again get a runner trying to move from 1st to 3rd.  Middle infielders Ceriani and Caffrey played well, as did Terrance Rodgers behind the plate.

The offense was led by Aaronson, who was on base 3 times, stole 2 bases and scored twice.  Speier, Fuentes and Caffrey each had 2 hits, Dyer had 2 RBIs and Zoller scored 2 runs.

After a slow start the Floods have improved over the last 3 games.  They'll be looking to continue that trend in their next game on May 16th.

FLOODS BATTLE BUT LOSE 2 TO PATRIOTS

The Floods battled every inch of the way but dropped 2 games to the Patriots by identical 7 - 6 scores, the second game in 11 innings, on April 25th at Florin High School.  The Floods had their best team effort of the young season as they fought hard to overcome Patriot leads and key injuries, but came up just short in both contests.

The lead changed hands 5 times in this seesaw ballgame.  Rob Dyer started for the Floods and gave up a run on 2 hits in the first inning, but a nice 6 -4 - 3 (Ryan Ceriani to Joe Caffrey to Casey Zoller) double play retired the side.  The defense continued to shine as Dyer held the Patriots hitless over the next 3 frames.  With a man on 1st and 1 down in the 3rd, 1st baseman Zoller fielded a ground ball, stepped on the bag and threw to Ceriani for the tag on the runner at 2nd to complete the double play.  With 2 down in the 4th catcher Geordie Osborn threw to Ceriani to nail the base-runner attempting to steal 2nd.

But the Floods bats were quiet early in the game as they went to the 4th looking for their 1st base hit.  With 1 out Taylor Speier got that hit and Osborn followed with a walk.  Then with 2 down Zoller doubled to drive in 2 and give the Floods the lead.  Caffrey followed with a single but Zoller was thrown out at the plate on a close play and the game moved to the 5th inning with the Floods leading 2 - 1.

In the 5th the Patriots got their 1st base hit off of Dyer since the 1st inning, as a Floods error resulted in 2 unearned runs and the Floods trailed 3 - 2.  In the 6th the Floods manufactured a run and tied the score without a base hit - lead off man Will Aaronson walked, was sacrificed to 2nd by Ceriani, stole 3rd with 2 down, and scored on an infield error.  Dyer continued to shut down the Patriots as he completed 7 innings allowing only 3 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 5.  The Floods threatened to take the lead again in the bottom of the 7th as Val Ravarra singled, stole 2nd and went to 3rd on a wild pitch, but he was stranded there and the game went to the 8th tied 3 - 3.

Ceriani relieved Dyer in the 8th and the Patriots scored 2 unearned runs on 2 singles and a couple of Floods errors.  The damage could have been much worse but for the defensive work of Floods 3rd baseman Dan Howell.  Howell had already flashed the leather in the 6th when he ranged far to his left to field a ground ball and start an inning - ending 5 - 4 - 3 double play.  He made 3 nice plays in the 8th, again moving to his left to spear a line drive for the 1st out, and making 2 nice plays on difficult ground balls for the other 2 outs of the inning.

Trailing 5 - 3 in the bottom of the 8th the Floods rallied for 3 runs on 5 base hits to regain the lead.  Alec Moorhouse, Aaronson and Ceriani all singled to open the inning.  With the bases loaded and 1 out Osborn drove in a run with a groundout.  Then with 2 down Dyer singled to drive in the tying run and the go ahead run came home on an error.  Zoller also singled in the inning and the Floods went to the 9th leading 6 - 5.

The Patriots lead off man singled to open the 9th, but Osborn promptly threw to Ceriani to erase him on a caught stealing.  But a walk and 2 base hits allowed the Patriots to push across 2 runs and regain the lead.

Moorhouse singled for the Floods in the bottom of the 9th and with 2 down Howell hit a line shot to right but the right fielder made a nice running catch for the final out as the Floods lost 7 - 6.

The Floods outhit the Patriots 10 - 8 in this game as 8 different players had base hits - 2 each for Zoller and Moorhouse - and Aaronson and Ceriani at the top of the order both score twice.  For the most part the Floods played excellent defense with 3 double plays as they were anchored by the left side of the infield - Ceriani at short and Howell at 3rd - and by Osborn's solid play behind the plate.  But they paid dearly for their miscues as 3 errors led to 4 unearned runs.  Overall it was a good team effort as they came up just short in this one.

Hit hard by injuries in this game, the Floods fought hard to overcome an early deficit and finally got even in the 9th, only to fall short again, this time in the 11th inning.

Struggling with a sore shoulder, Aron Healy took the mound for the Floods but couldn't continue after facing 5 batters.  Geordie Osborn relieved Healy with the bases loaded, no outs and 2 runs in, and retired the next 3 men allowing only 1 inherited runner to score on a sacrifice fly.  The inning ended when 2nd baseman Joe Caffrey fielded a ground ball, tagged the baserunner advancing from 1st and threw on to 1st to complete the double play.  Trailing 3 - 0 after 1, the Floods started coming back in the 2nd.  Rich Fuentes singled to open the inning and was retired on a fielder's choice by Casey Zoller.  But Dan Howell doubled to the fence in left center and Zoller scored all the way from 1st to cut the lead to 3 - 1.

Floods pitcher Osborn suffered a scary injury in the bottom of the 2nd.  With a man on 2nd and 1 out the Patriots hitter lined a shot back to the mound that nailed Osborn just above the knee.  Osborn had to be helped from the field.  The ball that hit Osborn actually carommed back to catcher Terrance Rodgers who threw to 1st baseman Zoller to record the 1 - 2 - 3 putout.  With 2 outs in the 2nd the Floods went to their 3rd pitcher of the game as Val Ravarra took the mound.  The Patriots managed a base hit to push across a run and make the score 4 - 1 before Ravarra retired the side.  The Floods cut into the lead in the 4th when Fuentes reached on an error, advanced on a base hit by Zoller, and scored on another error to make it 4 - 2.

In the 5th the Patriots put together a double, 2 singles and a walk, but could only score once because of the strong defensive play of the Floods.  The lead off man in the inning hit a line drive into the right field corner.  Right fielder Fuentes tracked it down and threw to cutoff man Caffrey, who threw a strike to 3rd baseman Rob Dyer to nail the baserunner trying to stretch it to a triple.  The Floods fought back again in the 6th as Fuentes singled, advanced on a walk to Tim Hodson, and scored on a 2 out base hit by Caffrey to cut the lead to 5 - 3.

The Patriots scored again in the 7th as Ravarra completed 5 and two-thirds innings for the Floods, allowing only 2 runs while striking out 3.  Fuentes relieved Ravarra in the 8th, retired the side on 12 pitches, and the Floods went to the 9th inning traiiling 6 - 3.

Hodson led off with a single but was retired at 2nd on a fielder's choice by Caffrey.  Alec Moorhouse singled and Ryan Ceriani reached on an error to load the bases with 1 out.  Taylor Speier then singled sharply to right on the 1st pitch he saw to drive in Caffrey and Moorhouse and cut the lead to 6 - 5.  Will Aaronson then had an RBI groundout to drive in Ceriani, and the Floods had come all the way back to tie the score at 6 - 6.

Fuentes held the Patriots scoreless in the 9th and 10th, again backed up by the Floods defense.  With runners on 1st and 2nd and 1 down in the 9th the Patriots batter hit a bloop to right.  The runners held to see if the ball would be caught.  Caffrey fielded it on one hop, threw to shortstop Ceriani at 2nd for the force out, and Ceriani threw to Dyer at 3rd to nail the baserunner trying to advance from 2nd.  It was a 4 - 6 - 5 double play, the Floods 3rd double play of the game and 6th of the day.  In the 10th the Patriots lead off man singled but was promptly thrown out trying to steal by catcher Rodgers.

Rob Dyer went back to the mound in the bottom of the 11th after throwing 7 innings in Game 1.  The Floods committed their only error of the game as the Patriots managed 2 base hits and scored an unearned run to win the game 7 - 6 as the Floods came up just short again.

The Floods again had 10 base hits, led by Ceriani and Fuentes who had two apiece.  Fuentes also scored twice and Speier drove in 2 as the Floods showed a lot of character in this game and double header as they fought to overcome adversity all day long.

The Floods lost to the Canes 17 - 2 on April 18th at Sierra College in Rocklin.  The loss left the Floods winless after 3 games early in the 18AAA season.

Rob Dyer got the start for the Floods and retired the side in order in the 1st.  In the 2nd a couple of Floods errors put men on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs, but catcher Geordie Osborn threw a strike to 3rd baseman Dan Howell to pick off the runner at 3rd and end the threat.

The Floods took the lead in the bottom of the first as Dyer walked with 2 outs and Taylor Speier delivered an RBI double to deep left center field.  In the 2nd the Floods loaded the bases with no outs on singles by Casey Zoller and Val Ravarra and a walk to Will Aaronson, but could only push 1 run across as a double play and a groundout retired the side, and the Floods led 2 - 0.  The Canes tied the score in the 3rd on a walk and a couple of base hits, but with 2 outs a key error led to 3 additional unearned runs.  The Floods threatened in the bottom of the 3rd as Ryan Ceriani and Speier had base hits, but they were unable to score and went to the 4th trailing 5 - 2.

The 4th turned out to be the inning from hell for the Floods.  The Canes sent 15 men to the plate, had 9 base hits, a walk and a hit batter, and scored 10 times to make the score 15 - 2.  Slade Fogelman relieved Dyer in the 5th and did a nice job holding the Canes to only 2 additional runs - 1 earned - as he scattered 4 hits while striking out 2.  But that 4th inning outburst was too much to overcome as the Floods managed only 1 additional base hit the rest of the way - a single by Aaronson - and the game ended 17 - 2 after 7 innings on the 10-run rule.

The Floods will look to get on track in a double header against the Patriots on April 25th.

The Floods lost to the Firebirds 4 - 0 on April 18th at Lembi Park in Folsom.  The Floods pitched effectively and played excellent defense in this game, but just couldn't get on track with the bats.

Aron Healy made his first start for the Floods and did a good job shutting down the Firebirds through the first 3 innings, limiting them to 3 base hits, as the Floods defense backed him up with a couple of nice 6 - 4 - 3 (Ryan Ceriani to Joe Caffrey to Casey Zoller) double plays in the 2nd and 3rd frames.  But Healy tired in the 4th and the Firebirds had 4 straight hits to push across 3 runs.

Jack McGee relieved Healy with 1 down in the 4th and quickly retired the side.  McGee pitched well through the 7th inning, allowing only 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 4.  Geordie Osborn took over in the 8th and made quick work of the Firebirds on 13 pitches.  Meanwhile the Floods continued to play errorless defense, as the infield was solid, the outfield of Rob Dyer, Will Aaronson and Val Ravarra contributed some nice plays, and Terrance Rodgers did a good job behind the plate.

But the story of this game was the inability of the Floods to get anything going on offense as they managed only 4 base hits - doubles by Ceriani and Taylor Speier, and singles by Zoller and Rodgers.  After the 3rd inning they had only 4 baserunners - on 2 hits and 2 walks - as 17 of the last 21 men they sent to the plate were retired, 10 of them on strikeouts.

The Floods will look to get the bats going in their next game against the Canes.

The Floods lost their 18AAA season opener to the Scorpions 11 - 1 on March 21st at Mather Sports Complex, as they let a close game get out of hand in the late innings.

Rob Dyer started for the Floods and pitched 6 strong innings, allowing only 4 hits and 2 runs while striking out 5.  Dyer retired 12 of the first 14 men he faced as the Scorpions managed only 2 bloop singles through 4 innings.  But 2 base hits and a hit batter led to a couple of runs in the 5th as the Floods fell behind 2 - 0.

The Floods bats were quiet also as they had only 2 base hits - a double by Geordie Osborn and a single by Will Aaronson - through the first 6 frames, and the score remained 2 - 0 going to the 7th.

Slade Fogelman took the mound for the Floods in the 7th and things unravelled quickly.  Struggling with his control, Fogelman walked 3 and hit a batter, and after 2 base hits and a Floods error the Scorpions had pushed across 6 more runs to extend the lead to 8 - 0.  Osborn relieved Fogelman and quickly retired the side but the damage was done.  The problems continued in the 8th as a walk and an error led to 3 more Scorpions runs - 2 unearned - and the Floods found themselves in a deep hole behind 11 - 0.

The Floods only offensive production came in the bottom of the 8th.  Tim Hodson led off and singled sharply to center.  Dan Howell also singled and with 1 out Joe Caffrey doubled to the fence in right center to drive in the lone Floods run of the game.  But with runners on 2nd and 3rd and 1 out the Floods were unable to do any additional damage and the game ended after 8 innings on the 10-run rule.

Defensively the Floods seemed rusty as 3 errors led to 3 unearned runs.  But there were some highlights.  Left fielder Rich Fuentes made a nice sliding catch of a fly ball in the 4th, and Floods pitchers caught line drives hit back to the mound 3 times - Dyer twice and Osborn once.  Val Ravarra played well at 2nd base and Osborn and Howell were solid behind the plate as they shared catching duties.

Overall, 5 walks, 2 hit batters and 3 errors was just not going to get it done against a Scorpions team that played errorless defense and issued only 1 free pass.

The Floods will look to get on the winning track in their next game on March 28th.
